Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Cannabinology STS Spray Kit is designed with the grower in mind. The kit contains everything you need to sex reverse female plants and produce feminized seeds at home or in a commercial setting. Our proprietary Silver Thiosulfate formula provides the extended shelf life of a 2 part STS kit with the ease of use, accuracy, and repeatability of a premixed STS spray.

  • STS stands for Silver Thiosulfate. When applied to plants, Silver Thiosulfate (STS) acts as an ethylene blocker. Ethylene can be considered the female hormone in plants. By preventing the action of ethylene you can force a female plant to develop and produce male-type flowers, pollen sacks, and pollen. Since this pollen was made by a female, the pollen can be used to pollinate another female plant creating feminized seeds which will be 100% female.

  • STS is a compound that blocks the action of ethylene, the "female hormone" in many species of plants. When you apply the Silver Thiosulfate (STS) spray, the plants absorb the compound through their leaves or flowers where it blocks the action of ethylene. This causes the plant to grow and develop as if it were male. As the flowers develop, a plant treated with Silver Thiosulfate (STS) will develop male type flowers, pollen sacks and pollen rather than calyxes and pistils. The pollen that is released will carry only the genes for female plants.

  • As with most things it depends on the variety. Most varieties take up to 30 days to show signs of masculinity. Some varieties can take longer.

  • The short answer is no.

The long answer is, it depends on the genetics of the seed mother and the pollen donor. Female plants sprayed with STS remain genetically female and don't take on any extra hermaphroditic traits from being sprayed with Silver Thiosulfate (STS) spray, but if either of the parents have hermaphroditic traits then it is possible to have hermaphrodites in the offspring. The chance of hermaphrodites is also increased if you are “selfing”, using the same plant or the same cut as both the seed mother and the pollen donor. Regardless, the hermaphroditic traits come from the genetics of the parents not the process of sex reversing using Silver Thiosulfate (STS) spray.
